Rhizome long creeping, slender. Culms solitary or several and loosely tufted, 10-40 cm tall, 0.25-0.5 mm wide, trigonous, smooth.
Leaves shorter than or overtopping culm, few; blades narrowly linear, 1.5-3 mm wide; sheath pale yellow to yellowish brown.
Spikes (2-)3-5, spaced except uppermost two are often contiguous, erect; terminal spike staminate, linear-cylindrical, 1-3 cm long, 1.2-1.5 mm wide pale brown; lateral spikes pistillate, narrowly cylindrical, 0.7-3 cm long, 2-2.5 m wide, loosely serveralmany flowered. Bracts sheathing, 0.6-l.5 cm long; lowest bract with leafy blade, surpassing subtending spike, shorter than inflorescence; upper blades setaceous.
Pistillate glumes ovate to somewhat elongated, apex obtuse or subacute, pale or yellowish brown, green costa often ending in mucro at glume apex. Utricles erect, obovoid, trigonous, 2.8-3.5 mm long, finely several-nerved, glabrous; beak scabrous on margins, minutely 2-toothed at orifice. Achenes tightly inclosed, obovoid, mitrate at apex, ca. 2 mm long, trigonous; stigmas 3.
